ENLIGHTENED EQUIPMENT Revelation Quilt.

  • Warm - My Revelation Quilt is filled with 850 DownTek with a temperature: of 10°F (-12°C), paired with a sleeping pad provides you the additional insulation underneath your body that a traditional mummy sleeping bag does not provide when compressed.

  • Lightweight - I chose the longest quilt Enlightened Equipments makes at 6’6” long and 58” wide and still it weighs only 19.18oz.

  • Versatile - Can be used like a quilt in the traditional sense like you use on your bed at home fully open and loose or there is an ability to cinch up the footbox closed to provide additional warmth for your feet.

I remember the very moment my father and I went to Mickey’s Surplus in Kansas City to buy my first mummy bag, I felt so proud. I don’t know the model but the brand name is Slumberjack and I used that bag for years. I thought it packed up so small, at least compared to the rectangular bag I used before that.

When I first heard about backpacking quilts, I was dubious to say the least. I quickly came around when I learned that half of my mummy bag was doing absolutely nothing! When the insulation is under compression it DOES NOT INSULATE! I was carrying all that extra weight and using up valuable space in my backpack for NOTHING! Ok, I was ready to make the switch!

The Specs: The Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt is by far the best “sleeping bag” I have ever used. It packs up to half the size of the Slumberjack mummy bag and a quarter of the weight coming in at 19.18oz. My quilt is 6’x6” long and 58” wide, and filled with 850 DownTek with a temperature of 10°F (-12°C). Since I am a taller guy (6’ 3”) I opted for the longest quilt they make.

A quick educational side note: 1 ounce of 850 fill power down will fill 850 cubic inches - the higher fill power the lighter your bag/quilt will be for a given insulation value. So my quilt would have been lighter if I opted for the 950 fill vs. the 850 fill and still be at 10°F. C’est la Vie.

Vetted Review: As I have already pointed out, this quilt is super light, very warm, it’s also incredibly flexible. You can use the quilt as a flat quilt like the one on your bed home, or there is an ability to cinch up the footbox closed to provide more warmth for your feet. Since this is a quilt, its best performance comes when it’s paired with a sleeping pad (my current one is the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite) while using the included pad attachment elastic strap to complete the sleep system. Pairing with an inflatable pad provides the insulation under your body by not being compressed, and the quilt over your body. I have used this quilt and pad combination multiple times on top three or more feet of snow at temperatures well below freezing and I have stayed incredibly warm all night long.

One downside of this quilt is that I have the 10°F, so it's way too warm to use in warmer months - luckily Enlightened Equipment makes 50°F, 40°F, 30°F, 20°F, and 0°F as well. Look forward to an update to this review when I get my 50°F quilt but in the meantime I have found myself using the Coleman Stratus Fleece Sleeping Bag Liner during the hottest summer months instead of my beloved quilt as it provides me just the right amount of warmth and comfort I need.

Customization: If you ready my ULA X-PAC Circuit review then you know I love the custom colors I was able to get, serendipitously Enlightened Equipment obliges my love of customization with the ability to pick from multiple colors! Better yet, they even use the same materials and technology to make Outwear and I was able to custom order a jacket to match my sleeping quilt.
